State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa will be the next speaker at the Chamber’s Government Affairs Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 21 from noon to 1:00 p.m. at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, 1200 Ash Ave.
Elected in 1981, Senator Hinojosa proudly represents District 20, which includes parts of western Hidalgo, Brooks, Jim Wells and Nueces counties.
In 2015, Senator Hinojosa worked hard to provide over $4 billion in tax relief to our Texas homeowners and small businesses. $1.2 billion in property tax relief through an increase to the homestead exemption from $15,000 to $25,000; and $2.6 billion in franchise tax relief, including a 25% rate reduction. During his more than 20 years as an elected representative of South Texas, Senator Hinojosa has received a number of awards for his public service. He was named “Top Ten Best Legislators” for 2013 by Texas Monthly magazine, making it his third time to receive the prestigious honor. He was also named “Top Ten Legislator” by Capitol Inside for the third time as well.
With the 85th Legislative Session to begin January 10, the Chamber will invite our area elected representatives and senators to discuss what their top legislative priorities will be, what issues they see the state is facing and what legislation they will propose in support of the business community. The Chamber and other Valley communities and organizations are currently planning RGV Day in Austin, a legislative outreach trip scheduled for February 7.
Chamber members are invited to be part of the Chamber’s Government Affairs Council. To register or to RSVP for the upcoming meeting, please contact Michelle at 956-682-2871.
